Illinois Ranked in Top Five for Management Scholarship

In a new study in the Journal of Management (August 2008, Vol. 34, Iss. 4, page 641), a total of 1,600 universities and 25,000 management scholars were assessed based on their impact, as measured by citations in articles published in the top 30 management research journals during the period from 1981 to 2004. The University of Illinois was ranked in the top five universities along with Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford and the University of Michigan. This ranking is based on published work by faculty from the College of Business, the School of Labor and Employment Relations, the Department of Psychology, and other parts of the University.

Four members of the LER faculty made the list of the 150 most cited management scholars (Fritz Drasgow, Charles Hulin, Greg Northcraft, Deborah Rupp), along with other faculty in Psychology and Business. A large number of UIUC alums made the list (over 20), with PhDs from LER, Psych, and Business.

The authors of the study -- Philip M. Podsakoff, Scott B. MacKenzie, Nathan P. Podsakoff and Daniel G. Bachrach -- found that university size, the number of PhDs awarded, research expenditures, and endowment assets had the biggest impact on university publications. They also foung that total publications, years in the field, graduate school reputation, and editorial board memberships had the biggest effect on a scholar’s citations.
