I chose to conduct my own job search as well as take part in all of the Career Services Recruiting. My experiences indicated that even in economic slumps, being at ILIR and taking advantage of career services couldn't be beat. I had multiple offers, and felt that the companies were really pursuing the students, rather than the other way around.

While the Career Services Office is here to help you every step of the way, it is important that you realize that our services are only one element of a successful job search. A successful job search starts with thorough preparation and planning, in addition to the guidance, interviews, and workshops you have use of through ILIR.

First, it's never too early to begin preparing! You may be interviewing for internships within a month of beginning your program at ILIR, so start your contact with the Career Services Office as soon as you are admitted to work on your resume and get ideas for summer jobs. Try to get some HR experience before you begin the program - even on a volunteer basis if you are not able to find work experience for the summer. Having some experience with HR, no matter how small, could push you over the edge for an internship opportunity, and helps you to beef up your resume. Additionally, use our InterviewStream account to practice interviewing before the big day comes!

Be aware that a successful job search is a matter of having the right attitude. A positive attitude is the cause of a successful job search, not the result. Remember that the more negative you are about your own abilities, your job prospects, the companies you apply to work for, and life in general, the less likely you are to land a job. Employers want people who believe in themselves and their skills, who want to work, who want to work for them, and who generally have a positive attitude.

Another important step in this process is to assess your personal characteristics; take a good look at who you are and what you have done. This will require time and effort, but the time you invest will be worthwhile. The information you discover will be essential when writing your resume and preparing for job interviews. The Career Services Office will work with you to polish your resume and your interviewing skills once you have done the proper preparation.

Often overlooked is the power of networking. Take advantage of student teaching, summer employment, tutoring, community service, and volunteering experiences. It is important to reach out to professors, colleagues, family members, and friends to help you find teaching positions. Additionally, utilize the contacts you make through workshops and events put on by the ILIR Career Services Office, and through opportunities to meet and speak with ILIR alumni. These contacts will be invaluable to you throughout your job search and future career.

Finally, you must begin to investigate job opportunities beyond the employers who recruit at ILIR. Take advantage of the Web links listed on this site to help you get started. In the end … these tips will help you be successful in your job search. Good luck!
