Teaching Philosophy
"I use two basic methods. In courses such as employment law, where an expert body of knowledge must be conveyed, I like the ‘sage from the stage’ approach. Even though this involves a traditional lecture format, I assign case materials rather than texts. Why? This enables students to learn how to analyze case materials for themselves. Other courses, such as collective bargaining, benefit from more student interaction. Here I use ‘the guide on the side,’ leading students through a series of bargaining, mediation, and arbitration simulations."
Research Interests
Professor LeRoy's recent research publications have focused on ADR topcs such as cost allocation in mandatory arbitration awards. More generally, his empirical research has focused on permanent replacement strikes, expansion of the lockout doctrine, presidential regulation of private sector employment relationships, and nonunion employee representation groups. His research has been cited by the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources (Senate Rep't 105-12); U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals; Minnesota Supreme Court; Wall Street Journal and New York Times.
