Intellectually Exciting

The faculty brings together different theoretical and practical perspectives on the meaning of the employment relationship. The myriad perspectives have helped me sharpen my research questions and to provide students alternative perspectives besides my own.

Research Interests

Martocchio's research interests have focused on various human resource management issues, including, compensation, training, and absenteeism. Recently, he formed a small research group (including Professors Dencker, Joshi, and Doctoral Candidate Niti Pandey) to study generatinal dynamics in the workplace. They already published one article on the role of employee benefits programs as a source of intergenerational conflict in the workplace. They are presently conducting an empirical study on generational patterns in HR professionals' career mobility.

Professor Martocchio is the author of numerous articles in such journals as Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal, and the Industrial and Labor Relations Review. He received the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contributions from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He also is a fellow of the Society as well as the American Psychological Association.

Martocchio is the editor of an annual research series titled Research in Personnel and Human Resources Management, published by Elsevier. The series publishes monograph length conceptual papers designed to promote theory and research on important substantive and methodological topics in the field of human resources management.

Professor Martocchio has written two text books in the field o compensation and employee benefits: Strategic Compensation: A Human Resource Management Approach, 2006 Prentice Hall Business Publishing. The second book is titled Employee Benefits: A Primer for Human Resource Professionals (2nd edition, 2006, Irwin/McGraw-Hill).

He is currently Chair of the HR Division for the Academy of Management with more than 3,200 members.
